2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Age of the Frog Game.

My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Given that a collection of frogs is called an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Croaking characters are not at all new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. But, their popularity has noticeably surged in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are legitimate amphibian adventures.

A Data-Driven Dive

To grasp this trend, I conducted a deep dive into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The results tell a compelling story: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's growing prominence in the broader culture is also visible elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. But, the explosion in gaming seems particularly pronounced.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

In my opinion, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess built-in appealing traits for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as memorable characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and sticky tongues lend themselves to a myriad of unique mechanics.

A number of the announced projects directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year so far.

Should these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we might just be witnessing a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
