Debunking Venezuela Celebration Videos and AI-Generated Pictures of Maduro.

Synthetic graphics claiming to portray Venezuela's president in custody after his apprehension by the US have amassed tens of millions of views on social media.

How AI Images of the President Surfaced Within Hours

Initial fake AI image seemingly displaying him led off a aircraft emerged shortly after. This image was not shared any official government accounts; it was instead uploaded on the platform X by an account describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.

Verification involved an AI-watermark detector, determining the picture was produced or modified with AI tools.

Further synthetic visuals started circulating in the ensuing hours, seemingly depicting more angles of the leader under guard. Noticeable identifying marks on the graphics show they were posted by an Instagram profile called ultravfx.

AI analysis indicates the further pictures were also created or altered Google AI.

Real Photo Released but Fakes Continued

Donald Trump shared the genuine photograph of Nicolás Maduro restrained aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. Yet following this real photo was released, AI-generated pictures continued to spread but were altered to show the grey athletic wear seen on Maduro.

Online investigation show these updated fakes were first posted on TikTok by a graphic design profile. Once again, analysis confirms the new graphics were produced with AI tools.

Key Points:

  • AI-generated content spread rapidly after the news of Maduro's capture.
  • The initial fabricated image was shared on the same day on platform X.
  • Tools like AI-watermark detectors were used to confirm the images as inauthentic.
  • Fake images continued to spread and evolve even after the release of authentic photographs.
  • The source of many fabricated images was traced to specific online accounts focused on AI art.
