{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces close call with F1 safety personnel
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal collision during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when a pair of track officials ran across the track right in his path
The dangerous situation occurred on the third circuit when marshals were observed on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to replace his broken nose section
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Moments later, the Formula 1 racer Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you just see that? I could have... killed them"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was observing"
"I rejoined with a brand new hard tyres, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals running across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, frankly, it was incredibly risky"
Track Safety Questioned
"Clearly there's been a miscommunication somewhere but I've never encountered that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a live track track officials can be permitted to just sprint across the track in such a way. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some kind of clarification, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the FIA, is currently investigating the situation
"Subsequent to a first corner event, track officials was advised that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the FIA
"In the third rotation, track officials were notified and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the orders to send officials were rescinded and a safety warning flag was shown in that area"
"The examination is ongoing what occurred subsequent to that time"
