No fewer than 13 individuals lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.

The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
