Thomas Tuchel Claims Top Talents Don't Always Make Up the Strongest Squad
Thomas Tuchel has stated that assembling the highest-profile players is no assurance of creating the best squad dynamic. Tuchel suggested regardless of whether Jude Bellingham had returned to peak fitness after his shoulder injury, the player could still have been omitted from the recent national team selection.
Focus on Team Spirit
The Three Lions' manager also indicated that the Arsenal winger's recall might not have occurred if his teammate Noni Madueke remained fit. The coach has put great importance on team cohesion with his choices for the upcoming Wales friendly and subsequent qualifier against Latvia.
"We're building the strongest squad," said the England boss, who challenged the conventional wisdom that World Cup winners always select their top forwards.
Proven Success
Tuchel pointed to the excellent atmosphere during last month's international break when England beat Andorra and performed brilliantly versus Serbia in Bellingham's absence. He saw no reason to alter the squad chemistry which delivered those impressive performances.
- Bellingham left out despite Real Madrid return
- Phil Foden omitted despite improved form
- Jack Grealish also missed out
Fitness Considerations
While Tuchel partially explained Bellingham's exclusion to fitness concerns, he acknowledged that the player wanted to be included during their conversation. The German coach had earlier apologized to Bellingham for comments regarding his playing behavior.
"Don't you think that behavior on the bench, support from training, and squad unity enables the starting eleven to perform at their best?" he questioned.
Team Choices Explained
Tuchel emphasized that his selections weren't individual targeting specific individuals but instead rewarded those who had delivered during the previous campaign.
"What would be my explanation dropping them while remaining authentic in my words?" Tuchel asked.
Injury Enforced Changes
The sole alteration in selection proved necessary with the unfit Noni Madueke being replaced by the returning Saka. The manager explained that the Arsenal winger could have been excluded had Madueke stayed healthy.
Other absentees featured Chelsea's attacking midfielder, who remains affected by injury problems. With only two more camps before the World Cup, time is running out for certain individuals to prove themselves.
Tournament Timing Issues
The manager revealed his preference for England's World Cup games to start later because of temperature worries across the host nations. Tuchel recognized this might cause viewing difficulties for English fans but maintained athlete protection must come first.
"I understand the fans will not like it but for the team it's better with later kickoffs," Tuchel said. "The players make the sport and we have to protect them."
